This year the largest scale renovation project in Shanghai will focus on relocation, more than 3000 households will bid farewell to their old homes.
On the morning of July 16, 2026, the Luoli Vitality Corridor in the Republic New Road Street, Jing'an District, Shanghai was filled with celebrations, with ten moving trucks lined up along the roadside with "Good Luck in Your New Home" written on them. Before the vehicles started, a resident sat in the front passenger seat shouting to their old friends outside the window. On this day, the concentrated relocation of the 128 old neighborhoods redevelopment project took place. The project involves more than 160 buildings and a total of 3481 households, making it the largest old neighborhood redevelopment project in Jing'an District in recent years and the largest urban renewal project in Shanghai so far this year. Wang Zhen, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Shanghai Municipal Construction and Transportation Work and Director of the Shanghai Housing, Urban and Rural Construction Management Committee, introduced that by the end of June, Shanghai had completed the renovation of 486.7 million square meters of old neighborhoods, achieving 61% of the annual plan. The renovation of old residential buildings was completed with a total of 150,100 square meters, achieving 75% of the annual plan, benefiting 3,733 households. The entire transformation project of urban villages has been initiated, with a total of 5,226 households of relocated villagers.
