The UK Meteorological Office has raised the forecast for tropical storm risk in the northwest Pacific typhoon activity this year, predicting an "unusually active typhoon season" with activity levels about 40% higher than the 1991-2020 average. The latest forecast for July shows that there will be 28 tropical storms, 19 typhoons, and 12 intense typhoons from June to November, compared to the 30-year averages of 25.5 tropical storms, 16.0 typhoons, and 9.3 intense typhoons. The agency stated that the strong El Nio phenomenon currently forming is expected to have a "strong enhancing effect" on northwest Pacific typhoon activity in the summer and autumn.
