Burnham wins support from the majority of British Labour Party MPs, essentially securing the position of party leader.
On the 9th local time, the first day of the election for the leader of the British Labour Party, Andy Burnham received 322 nominations from 403 Labour MPs, essentially securing the position of party leader and potentially becoming the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. According to the rules of the Labour Party leader election, candidates must receive at least 81 nominations from Labour MPs to proceed to the next stage of the competition. Currently, besides Burnham, no other Labour MPs have received nominations. At the moment, Burnham is just one step away from securing the position of party leader. He has received 322 nominations and only needs one more nomination from a MP. Other potential competitors will not be able to obtain the required 81 nominations, making Burnham the only candidate. Despite overwhelming support, according to the election procedure, Burnham will still have to wait until July 17th to complete the relevant procedures before being officially announced as the elected leader of the Labour Party. He will then accept the appointment from the King and become the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
