Valar Atomics, a nuclear energy startup based in California, uses an advanced reactor to generate electricity for NVIDIA's AI chips. Although the power produced is very weak, this is the first time in the United States that a new generation reactor has been used for this purpose. During a demonstration on Wednesday at the company's base in Utah, Valar's Ward 250 reactor was connected to a NVIDIA Blackwell chip and used to temporarily host a website. The two companies also announced an agreement to jointly explore methods for developing AI systems powered by nuclear energy. This latest development occurred after the reactor reached "criticality" last month, marking the beginning of sustained fission reactions. Valar is part of a group of companies developing next-generation nuclear technologies that use new materials and designs aimed at improving safety and performance. However, the industry is still in its early stages, and the United States has yet to commercialize any advanced reactors.
