National Energy Administration: In order to support the rapid development of new energy and ensure the energy needs are met, the role of coal-fired power generation will continue to be emphasized in the 11th Five-Year Plan period.
On June 26th, the State Council Information Office held a series of theme press conferences titled "Starting the '15th Five-Year Plan' Initiative", introducing the planning for accelerating the construction of a new energy system during the '15th Five-Year Plan' period. Wan Jinsong, spokesperson and deputy director of the National Energy Administration, stated that globally, fossil energy remains the cornerstone for ensuring the security and stability of power systems in various countries. Currently, the proportion of thermal power in China's installed capacity is about 40%, lower than the global average. In recent years, China's achievements in new energy development have been widely recognized, contributing to over half of the global increase in wind and solar power installed capacity. Behind this rapid development is the flexibility and regulation provided by thermal power. China has coordinated the transition of traditional energy with the rapid development of new energy, paving the way for a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient high-quality development path. Since the '14th Five-Year Plan', the proportion of coal power installed capacity in China has decreased from 49% to 32%, and the proportion of electricity generation has decreased from 61% to 51%. During the '15th Five-Year Plan' period, in order to support the rapid development of new energy and ensure energy demand, the role of coal power will continue to be emphasized.
