According to reports, earlier this month the United States implemented new regulations prohibiting foreign nationals from using the top AI models under Anthropic PBC. Subsequently, the European Union has engaged in negotiations with the Trump administration to restore access rights to this series of models. Hanna Verkning, Deputy Executive Vice President of the European Commission, revealed that this week a senior EU policy official visited Washington specifically to discuss the US regulatory measures; as a result of the restrictions, Anthropic has completely shut down global access channels for users to the Fable 5 and Mythos 5 cutting-edge models. Verkning stated in an interview in Milan on Thursday, "I have personally communicated with the Trump administration on this issue, and we have also been in negotiations with Anthropic company." This negotiation highlights the core demand of the EU: even as the EU is actively promoting digital sovereignty and reducing dependence on US technology products, obtaining access rights to cutting-edge AI systems remains a priority - these models can provide powerful tools for identifying cybersecurity vulnerabilities. The US's restriction on foreign entities using the models for reasons of national security also clearly indicates that even US allies will be subject to unilateral US policy constraints.
