On June 24th local time, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the cholera epidemic in the West Kordofan state of central Sudan continues to spread. Since May 15th, a total of 734 suspected cases of cholera have been reported locally, with 105 deaths. Tedros expressed concern about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Kordofan. He pointed out that ongoing armed conflicts have led to the near paralysis of the Sudanese health system, which is a major reason for the rapid spread of the epidemic. He also stated that the World Health Organization is working with partners to strengthen the supply of safe drinking water and sanitation facilities, establish cholera treatment centers, pre-position rapid diagnostic tests and medicines to contain the spread of the epidemic. On April 15th, 2023, armed clashes erupted in the capital Khartoum between the Sudanese armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces, spreading to other areas. The ongoing armed conflict for more than three years has resulted in at least 59,000 deaths.
