Meta Platforms and Microsoft have both pledged hundreds of billions of dollars in additional data center leasing expenses in their respective recent quarters, further raising the overall industry's investment scale in the field of AI. These commitments have pushed the total future data center leasing commitments of large cloud computing companies to over $850 billion. According to analysis of regulatory filings, the amount of these leasing commitments has continued to rise over the past year as tech giants expand their server clusters. These future leasing costs are in addition to existing leasing contracts and will not be reflected on the balance sheet until the companies actually start making payments. Although these leasing commitments are typically for data centers, they may also cover facilities such as offices or warehouses. Some leasing contracts include specific terms that allow companies to cancel future performance obligations under certain conditions.
