NVIDIA supplier SK Hynix has shipped samples of the next-generation chips to major customers.
SK Hynix announced on Thursday that it has sent samples of its latest generation High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) chips to major customers, as the South Korean chip maker seeks to strengthen its position in the rapidly growing artificial intelligence semiconductor market. The company stated that the new 12-layer HBM4E chip has a single pin transmission rate of up to 16 gigabits per second, with a more than 20% improvement in efficiency compared to previous generation products. HBM chips are used in AI chipsets and are a key component in processors produced by companies like NVIDIA, helping to handle the massive amount of data required to train AI models. SK Hynix is a major HBM supplier to NVIDIA, with competitors Samsung and Micron also competing in this field.
