According to an analysis by The New York Times, American consumers continue to be troubled by rising food prices, especially those planning summer barbecue parties. The price of ground beef has increased by 12.1% compared to last year, while the price of frankfurters has risen by 7.7%. The prices of lettuce and tomatoes have also increased compared to last year. Egg prices are likely to be a focal point in the midterm election campaign, as they rose by 4% in May but have actually decreased by more than 35% compared to the same period last year. The trend in prices of other goods is more complex and it is difficult to determine where tariffs are still having an effect. In the past few months, prices of household goods have continued to decline, rising by only 2.4% compared to the same period last year; while clothing prices have continued to rise, increasing by 4.8% compared to last year. The prices of healthcare products, including prescription drugs, have decreased by 1.8% compared to the same period last year.
