Hormuz Strait shipping interrupted, Suez Canal tanker traffic increases

Due to the closure of the Suez Canal, shipping has turned to the Red Sea as an alternative energy transportation route. In April, the number of oil tankers passing through the Suez Canal in Egypt increased by nearly one-third, setting a new high since early 2024. Data from the Egyptian National Center for Statistics and Information show that a total of 529 oil tankers passed through the Suez Canal that month, an increase of 28% compared to the previous year. The total number of various types of vessels passing through the canal also increased, reaching 1182 vessels, up 14% from April 2025.
