According to a report by The Information citing two sources familiar with the matter, OpenAI is in negotiations to lease a proposed 10-gigawatt data center campus in Ohio, a deal that may include financial support from NVIDIA. The report states that, based on current costs for chips, labor, power, and other inputs, the construction cost of the campus could exceed $50 billion. The report also adds that OpenAI will control the equipment of the facility through a 20-year lease agreement, with rent payments to begin once operations start; the first phase is expected to launch in 2028. The facility, set to be one of the largest of its kind, will be developed by SB Energy, a subsidiary of SoftBank, on Department of Energy land in southern Ohio. NVIDIA is expected to provide hardware for the facility and offer financial support for OpenAI's lease agreement and SB Energy's financing.
