The Ebola outbreak in the Congo continues to spread, and the difficulties in prevention and control are increasing due to ongoing conflicts and population movements.
On May 21st, local time, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs stated that the Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to spread, and the humanitarian situation is deteriorating further. As of May 19th, Congo has reported a total of 51 confirmed cases and 4 deaths from Ebola, with 575 suspected cases and 148 suspected related deaths. The epidemic is concentrated in the northeastern province of Ituri, with 20 new confirmed cases reported on the 18th. The epidemic has now spread to neighboring provinces such as North Kivu and South Kivu, increasing the risk of cross-regional transmission significantly. Due to delays in confirming cases, the range of infected individuals is wide, further exacerbating the national risk of spread.
