In South Korea, one watermelon is selling for 136 yuan. Watermelon prices in South Korea have skyrocketed.
South Korea recently experienced an early arrival of heat wave, with many areas breaking the record for highest temperatures in mid-May. As a result, the demand for watermelons has increased. According to reports from South Korean media, as of the 17th, the latest average retail price for a single watermelon has reached nearly 30,000 Korean won, equivalent to about 136 Chinese yuan, an increase of nearly 25% compared to the same period last year. Industry insiders analyze that one of the main reasons for the rise in watermelon prices is the imbalance between supply and demand. South Korea has not yet entered the peak harvest period for watermelons, with only a few southern production areas in Gyeongsangnam-do and Jeollabuk-do able to supply. In addition, there have been shortages of domestic fruits such as melons, and the quantity of imported fruits such as oranges and kiwis has sharply decreased due to poor harvests overseas and rising transportation costs. This has made consumers more inclined towards watermelons.
