Institution: UK government bond yields reflect expectations of fiscal and inflation risks.
Reto Cueni of Syz Group stated in a report that the high yield of UK government bonds reflects a more relaxed fiscal policy, an increase in government debt, and the risk of high inflation. Following a recent disastrous defeat for Labour in local elections, with calls from members of parliament and senior cabinet officials for UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to resign, UK government bond yields hit a multi-year high on Tuesday. "Current market pricing indicates that investors have factored in a meaningful political risk premium into UK rates," Cueni said, noting that high energy prices and concerns about inflation have also driven up UK government bond yields. Tradeweb data shows that the yield on 10-year UK government bonds has risen by 1 basis point to a current rate of 5.105%. The 10-year yield reached 5.135% on Tuesday, its highest level since 2008.
