European Central Bank President Lagarde: Carefully weighing the impact of the Iran conflict on inflation.
European Central Bank President Lagarde said on Saturday that they are carefully considering the impact of the Iran conflict on inflation to ensure that their actions are neither too early nor too late. Lagarde stated that ECB decision-makers are facing "enormous uncertainty" and need "more data" to understand the impact of the conflict. She refused to comment on whether the ECB will hike rates next month as many expect. "We are always wavering between the risks of reacting too quickly and reacting too slowly, and we must find the right path to guide our economy towards the 2% medium-term inflation target, which is our goal," she said. Lagarde added, "Both the markets and we are concerned about the same things, as they are also trying to make predictions." At the ECB, "we are all making our best efforts to bring the inflation rate back to 2%. The biggest difference with the market is that they do not have such an urgent need." She also said, "Our decisions will depend on the depth, duration, and impact of the crisis we are facing, and before making any decisions, we need more data to better understand price movements, as well as the impact on indirect costs and wage negotiations."
