Satellite images show suspected large-scale oil spills near Iran's Hormuz Island.
According to foreign media reports, satellite images this week show a suspected oil spill near Iran's main oil hub, Kharg Island, covering an area of tens of square kilometers. Images taken by satellites from May 6th to 8th show a grayish-white oil slick covering the sea west of the island. Conflict and Environment Researcher Leon Moreland said, "Visually, this oil slick appears to be consistent with characteristics of crude oil spills." He estimated the affected area to be around 45 square kilometers. Moreland added that it is currently unclear what caused this suspected oil spill and where the leak originated, but images from May 8th did not show any new signs of ongoing leakage. Louis Goddard, co-founder of the climate and commodities consulting firm Data Desk, also agrees that these images likely show an oil spill event. He said this may be the largest oil spill incident since the outbreak of the US-Iran war 70 days ago.
