Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zakharova wrote in the Russian media on the 4th that the US State Department is imposing US nationality on the children of Russian diplomats born in the United States, which not only violates international law, but also violates US domestic law. Zakharova said that US federal law clearly states that the children of foreign diplomats stationed in the United States cannot obtain US nationality by birth in the United States, because they enjoy diplomatic immunity and are not subject to the jurisdiction of the host country. She believes that the US State Department's imposition of US nationality on Russian diplomats' children born in the US under the pretext of the "birthright citizenship principle" in the Constitution is aimed at disrupting the process of eliminating "friction points" in bilateral relations between Russia and the US, and using the nationality of the children as an excuse to pressure Russian diplomats. Zakharova emphasized that Russia does not recognize the US State Department's imposition of US nationality on the children of Russian Embassy staff born in the US, and will require the US to confirm that these newborns are not subject to US jurisdiction and enjoy all the exemptions and privileges provided for in documents such as the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.
