The European Central Bank Commissioner Vincenzo de Silvio said that Europe "naively" believed that the free market economic model could survive in the global shift driven by the United States. He pointed out that EU policymakers are still pursuing goals such as open markets and limited national aid, but these goals no longer reflect the geopolitical reality shaped by Trump's "America First" policy. "Trade openness and strict rules for national aid are feasible in a rule-based world," de Silvio said. "But this world has disappeared, and if you are too attached to a world that has disappeared, then you are too naive." The core of his argument is that Europe has failed to internalize the fact that the global economy has moved away from a fair competitive environment. He said that the protectionist policies of the United States have reshaped this landscape. "The world has changed, and we cannot continue to do the same things, provide the same answers, when these issues have already failed to some extent in the past."
