On May 4th, the United States Central Command announced that the military will begin supporting "Operation Freedom" on May 4th to restore the freedom of navigation for commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz. This task, ordered by the President, aims to provide support for merchant ships seeking freedom to pass through this important international trade route. One quarter of global maritime oil trade, as well as a large amount of fuel and fertilizer products, are transported through this strait. General Brad Cooper, the Commander of the Central Command, stated, "Support for this defensive mission is crucial for regional security and the global economy while we maintain maritime blockade." Last week, the US State Department announced a new initiative in partnership with the Department of Defense to strengthen coordination and information sharing among international partners to support maritime security in the strait. The "Maritime Freedom Concept" aims to combine diplomatic actions with military coordination, which will be crucial during the "Operation Freedom." The US military's support for "Operation Freedom" will include missile destroyers, over 100 land- and sea-based aircraft, multi-domain unmanned platforms, and 15,000 troops.
