Google employees urge CEO to prevent US military from using its artificial intelligence technology.
More than 560 Google employees have jointly written to CEO Sundar Pichai urging him to refuse to allow the US government to use Google's artificial intelligence technology for classified military operations. The letter stated, "We want to see AI benefit humanity, not be used for inhumane or extremely harmful purposes. This includes but is not limited to lethal autonomous weapons and mass surveillance." Two participants stated that the letter to Pichai was coordinated by employees of Google's artificial intelligence lab, DeepMind. Signatories included two-fifths from the AI department, a similar proportion from the cloud business department, and the rest from other teams within Alphabet. Over 18 senior employees, including directors and vice presidents, signed the letter.
