At 10:50 on April 26, the first 180,000 cubic meters liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier "Georgetown", independently designed and built by China Merchants Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., was successfully delivered. The ship slowly departed from the China Merchants Heavy Industry Terminal in Nantong, Jiangsu and headed to Singapore. It is reported that "Georgetown" has a total length of 298.8 meters and a beam of 48 meters. It is equipped with a dual-fuel low-speed propulsion system, with advantages such as low evaporation rate and high environmental performance. It is currently the largest LNG carrier completed in China, marking a significant breakthrough in the construction of large clean energy vessels by Chinese shipbuilders. According to the Nantong border checkpoint, due to factors such as heavy fog and tides, large vessels have a "window period" when leaving the river, and they must sail during the rising tide and when there is relatively less traffic in the channel. Missing this window period will increase operating costs for companies. "We boarded the ship early for hull inspection to minimize clearance waiting time and ensure the safe departure of the 'Georgetown' during the rising tide," said Liang Junhong, deputy team leader of the fourth team on duty at the Nantong border checkpoint. LNG carriers are specialized vessels for transporting liquefied natural gas at temperatures as low as -163. This type of vessel is extremely difficult to design and construct, earning it the nickname of "the pearl on the crown of shipbuilding industry". Only a few shipyards worldwide possess the core construction capabilities for these vessels. Lu Jinlong, project manager of China Merchants Heavy Industry Co., Ltd.'s large LNG carrier project, mentioned that there are a total of 6 orders for this type of vessel, with the remaining 5 vessels all under construction and the next one expected to be delivered in 3 months.
