OpenAI CEO apologizes for not reporting the suspect in the shooting case, admits that there are flaws in the safety procedures.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently wrote a formal apology to the town of Tambulil Ridge in Canada for not timely reporting the activities of the suspected perpetrator of a mass shooting to the authorities. The tragedy occurred in February this year, resulting in 8 deaths, with the suspect being 18-year-old Jesse Van Ruutselaar. Reports indicate that OpenAI's automated moderation system flagged Van Ruutselaar's ChatGPT account in June 2025 due to violent content, leading the company to ban the account. Some employees viewed the content as a potential warning of real-world violence and urged leadership to contact Canadian law enforcement. However, company executives ultimately decided not to report to the authorities, a decision that sparked significant controversy after the tragedy. In the letter dated April 23, Altman expressed deepest condolences and apologized for the company's failure to take earlier action.
