Scientists at Sony AI have developed a ping pong robot that, in the latest showdown between humans and artificial intelligence, has the speed and precision to even defeat some professional players. This robot, named "Ace", combines visual sensors, model-free reinforcement learning, and high-speed robot hardware, with a structure similar to a crane-like mechanical arm with a ping pong paddle. The system can autonomously locate the ping pong ball in space, determine the appropriate return technique, hit the ball back to the opponent's side, and repeat this process continuously until the round ends. Robots like Ace are known as AI agents, which are systems that can solve multi-step problems by reasoning and taking action with limited human intervention.
