"Storage Doomsday" becoming popular has increased the prices of smartphones by AI.
With the increasing demand for AI hardware facilities, storage chip resources are shifting towards the high-profit AI field at an accelerating pace, squeezing the supply of consumer electronics products and raising the costs of a range of devices including laptops, smartphones, and gaming consoles. Many tech companies have recently raised their product prices. A new term has become popular recently, called RAMmageddon, which combines the English words for storage chips and the Armageddon, meaning "storage doomsday," to describe the current global shortage of storage chips in a severe situation. Samsung, Microsoft, and other competitors have also taken similar price increase measures. Samsung has raised the prices of mobile phones and tablets, while Microsoft has raised the prices of its Surface series laptops. GSMA President Mats Granryd stated that the shortage of storage chips is driving up the prices of smartphones, and some manufacturers have reduced the production of low-end models, resulting in a decrease in low-cost phones on the market, especially impacting emerging markets like Africa. Analysts at the International Data Corporation (IDC) predict that this tight situation may "continue until 2027."
