Fuel surcharge for domestic flights will be increased starting from April 5th.
Today, several airlines including Air China, Xiamen Airlines, and China Eastern Airlines announced the adjustment of the fuel surcharge for domestic flights. According to Xiamen Airlines, starting from April 5, 2026, the fuel surcharge for domestic flights will be adjusted. For flights less than 800 kilometers, the surcharge will increase from 10 RMB to 60 RMB, and for flights over 800 kilometers, it will increase from 20 RMB to 120 RMB. China Eastern Airlines announced that the fuel surcharge for domestic flights will be 60 RMB per passenger for flights under 800 kilometers and 120 RMB per passenger for flights over 800 kilometers.
It is understood that fuel costs are the largest single cost for airlines, accounting for 30% to 40% of their total operating costs. According to industry insiders, the recent increase in fees is closely related to the drastic fluctuations in international oil prices. According to the General Index, the price of jet fuel used for aircraft has doubled from around 800 USD per ton at the end of February to 1600 USD per ton, a much higher increase compared to gasoline, marine fuel, and other petrochemical products.
