On March 26, 2026, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Minister of Foreign Affairs, had a telephone conversation with Canadian Foreign Minister Anand as scheduled. Anand briefed on Canada's position on the situation in the Middle East, stating that Canada is committed to protecting civilians in conflicts, promoting de-escalation, preventing conflicts from spilling over, and reducing the impact on the global economy and supply chains. The Iran nuclear issue concerns the international non-proliferation regime and ensuring the safe navigation of the Strait of Hormuz is in the common interest of all parties. Canada is willing to work with China to urge peace and stop the war, and promote peace and stability in the region. Wang Yi reiterated China's principled position, stating that the Iran nuclear issue should be resolved through dialogue and should not be used as a reason for the use of force. The abuse of force will only bring serious consequences and the spillover of conflict threatens regional security and stability. Both the United States and Iran are willing to restart negotiations, and the international community should encourage both sides to return to the negotiating table and seek effective ways for a political solution. China and Canada can play a constructive role in this regard. Both sides also exchanged views on China-Canada relations and agreed that they should implement the outcomes of Prime Minister Kani's visit to China with a positive and pragmatic attitude, restart dialogues at all levels, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, and promote the stable and healthy development of the China-Canada new type of strategic partnership.
