Growth by over 16 times in one year! Digital RMB is entering Hong Kong.
A new trend in digital payments has quietly emerged in Hong Kong in recent times. A set of data disclosed by the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury Christopher Hui on March 25 revealed that the number of digital RMB wallets opened with Hong Kong phone numbers has reached 80,000, while the number of local merchants accepting digital RMB has surged from 300 to 5,200, an increase of more than 16 times in just one year. This progress is also reflected in the tangible implementation of digital RMB, which is reshaping the daily consumption habits of Hong Kong residents.
"A year ago, the places in Hong Kong where you could pay with digital RMB were few and far between, but now it has permeated into all aspects of life," said a local. Chain stores, hotels, travel agencies, restaurants, convenience stores, supermarkets - places where you commonly consume are increasingly displaying signs of supporting digital RMB. Convenient terminals such as 7-11, Circle-K, and FreshUP, consumer brands like Wellcome Telecom and Broadway Electronics, and well-known businesses like Chow Tai Fook and Maxim's have all put up signs supporting digital RMB. The integration of digital RMB with Hong Kong's "Faster Payment System" ensures a more convenient payment experience for Hong Kong citizens.
As the Hong Kong version of "Alipay," the "Faster Payment System" is a high-frequency tool for local residents to transfer money and make purchases. Now, with 18 local banks participating in the value-added digital RMB wallet through the "Faster Payment System," Hong Kong residents can easily top up their digital RMB wallets by simply using the system, with operations that are so simple it only takes a few steps to complete.
