Meta and Google were sentenced to pay 6 million dollars for social media addiction.
On Wednesday, a jury in Los Angeles ruled that Meta and Google are responsible for the social media addiction and mental health damages suffered by a 20-year-old woman. The jury ordered Meta to pay at least $2.1 million and Google to pay at least $900,000, covering actual damages such as treatment; in addition, punitive damages of $3 million were awarded, with Meta paying $2.1 million and YouTube paying $900,000. Both companies have stated that they will appeal the decision. As social media has been around for over twenty years, this ruling may become a turning point in global public opinion pushing back against the negative impact of their platforms on the mental health of young people.
