Meta and Google were found responsible in the social media addiction case.
The jury in the American social media addiction case has found that Meta Platforms and Google should be held responsible and must pay compensation to a 20-year-old woman. The woman alleged that she became addicted to the social media platforms of these two companies, leading to a mental health crisis. The ruling on Wednesday in Los Angeles was a victory for the plaintiff, Kaley G.M., and highlighted the financial risks faced by these companies. There are currently thousands of similar lawsuits accusing Instagram and YouTube of deliberately designing their platforms to be addictive for young users, disregarding their physical and mental health. The jury determined that Meta must pay at least $2.1 million in compensation for Kaley's losses, including treatment costs; Google must pay at least $900,000. The jury will further hear arguments to decide whether to award punitive damages against these companies.
