To ensure power supply in the Midwest, the US Energy Secretary urgently orders two coal power plants in Indiana to continue operating.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright issued an emergency order on Monday, requiring two coal-fired power plants in Indiana to continue operating to ensure that the Midwest region of the United States can continue to have "affordable, reliable, and safe" electricity supply. According to the order, Northern Indiana Public Service Company (CenterPoint Energy) and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator must take all necessary measures to ensure that designated generating units within the coal-fired power plants are ready to generate electricity at any time. Some of the generating units at these two coal-fired power plants were originally scheduled to be shut down by the end of 2025. The order emphasizes the priority of reducing electricity costs and minimizing the risk of power outages and associated costs. The order is effective from March 24 to June 21.
