Farewell to "God translation", Shenzhen proposes legislation to regulate foreign language signage.
Shenzhen will strengthen the standardization of the use and management of foreign language signage in public places, including spelling errors, improper translations, and Chinglish, through special legislation in the Special Economic Zone. Recently, the Shenzhen Municipal Bureau of Justice and the Foreign Affairs Office of the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government issued a notice for public opinions on the "Regulations on the Use and Management of Foreign Language Signage in Shenzhen Special Economic Zone." Shenzhen had already established the first national normative document in the field of foreign language signage in 2013 with the "Measures for the English Translation and Use of Public Signage in Shenzhen." This legislation further standardizes the setting and use of foreign language signage based on previous practices, aiming to enhance the city's internationalization level, create a more globally influential modern international metropolis, and serve high-level opening up to the outside world.
