SoftBank plans to build a $50 billion giant AI data center in Ohio.
SoftBank Group is planning to create a large-scale data center infrastructure project in Ohio, with CEO Masayoshi Son stating that they will invest $50 billion into this single project. "We will undertake the nation's largest construction project," said Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Friday when announcing the project with Son and Energy Secretary Chris Wright. SoftBank plans to build this artificial intelligence computing complex at a former uranium enrichment facility site owned by the U.S. Department of Energy, with an electricity consumption scale of up to 10 gigawatts. For comparison, 1 gigawatt of electricity generation capacity can power around 750,000 households at any given moment. The company estimates that the first phase of the data center project will cover 800 megawatts of power, costing between $30 billion to $40 billion, and is expected to be completed by early 2028. The project will be powered by gas-fired generation valued at around $33 billion, with these generation facilities set to be installed by the end of this decade.
