The last four remaining glaciers in Germany may all disappear by the 2030s.
German researchers announced their findings on the eve of World Glacier Day on March 21, stating that due to climate change, Germany's last four glaciers are melting at an accelerated rate and could disappear completely by the 2030s. The latest measurements from institutions such as the Bavarian Academy of Sciences show that the total area of the four remaining glaciers in Germany decreased by over a quarter between 2023 and 2025. The Broeis and Watzman glaciers, both located in the Alps in Berchtesgaden, Bavaria, have shrunk by over 40%. Researchers say that between 2023 and 2025, these four glaciers lost approximately 1 million cubic meters of ice in total, with an average annual ice thickness decrease of 1.6 meters, significantly faster than the rate of melting between 2018 and 2023. The researchers believe that this is mainly due to the consistently high temperatures in the Alps in recent years under the backdrop of climate change.
