On March 19, local time, the second phase of the Nairobi Railway Project held a groundbreaking ceremony in Kenya. Kenyan President William Ruto attended the event. Representatives from East African Community countries like Uganda, Kenyan government officials, local people, and more than 1,000 others attended the event. As a key extension of the iconic Belt and Road project jointly built by China and Kenya, the Nairobi Railway Phase 2 starts from the end point of Phase 1 in Nairobi and extends to Naivasha, with a total mainline length of 263.75 kilometers and a designed annual freight capacity of 22 million tons. It passes through important economic nodes such as Narok, Bomet, and Ahairo, ends at the third largest city and important transportation hub Kisumu in Kenya, and ultimately reaches the border city of Malaba in Uganda. The project also includes a Kisumu port branch line of 8.9 kilometers, connecting the railway to the port area of Lake Victoria, and linking with the Mombasa port in East Africa through the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway. It is a key project for promoting the backbone of the East African railway network, driving regional integration in East Africa, and promoting the principles of consultation, joint construction, and shared benefits between China and Kenya, and supporting Africa's connectivity and sustainable development.
