The United States was exposed to instigating Syria to assist in disarming Hezbollah without success.
According to American sources on the 17th, the United States had previously urged Syria to send troops to eastern Lebanon to assist in disarming Hezbollah, but the Syrian side was concerned about being dragged into the conflict and exacerbating sectarian tensions, so they have not made a decision yet. Four Syrian officials and sources who declined to be named said that officials from the United States and Syria first discussed the issue of Syria sending troops to Lebanon last year. Shortly before the United States and Israel launched military action against Iran this year, American officials again raised the idea. Another Western intelligence source said that the United States proposed Syria sending troops to Lebanon after launching military action against Iran. At the same time, some Syrian and Western sources said that the transitional government in Syria is carefully considering cross-border actions, but is still hesitant. A senior official in the Syrian transitional government said that Syria and its Arab allies unanimously believe that Syria should stay out of the conflict and only take defensive measures. It is reported that the United States has made suggestions to Syria that show an increasing willingness to take action to disarm Hezbollah. Regarding these reports, a spokesperson for the US State Department declined to comment on such "private diplomatic communications."
