A strong storm is strengthening near the northern coast of Australia and is expected to make landfall in the mining region of northern Queensland later this week, possibly bringing destructive winds and heavy rainfall. According to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, as of Wednesday morning local time, the tropical cyclone "Narelle" was located approximately 1100 kilometers northeast of Cairns with maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour. The bureau predicts that the cyclone will move westward and strengthen as it draws energy from warm waters, possibly making landfall on Friday with a Category 4 intensity. The cyclone is expected to bring heavy rain to large areas of northern Queensland, potentially affecting Cairns. Although the population in this region is sparse, it is the location of the Rio Tinto Group and the GAC aluminum ore mines. The bureau anticipates that these mines will be impacted by destructive gusts from Thursday afternoon. Bureau officials, including Jonathan, warned of the possibility of dangerous flash floods and rapidly rising river levels.
