Netflix co-CEO discusses AI movie production and dubbing: AI should be a tool for creators.
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos arrived in Brussels on Tuesday to deliver a clear message to regulators before the European Union is set to debate streaming media regulations: do not make the rules too complicated. When asked how AI will change Netflix, Sarandos said, "My core belief is that AI should be a tool for creators. Like the evolution of production tools throughout history, AI is a rapid and significant upgrade. Creators can achieve things with AI that were previously impossible, faster, at a lower cost, but most importantly, make the content better. Consumers do not care how fast or cheap something is, they only care if it's good. The acquisition of InterPositive can help creators enhance their work using footage. It won't replace writers, actors, or lighting technicians, but it will make production more efficient and the quality better." When asked if AI will weaken the role of dubbing actors, Sarandos said, "We have conducted extensive A/B testing: if viewers don't like the dubbing, they will turn it off immediately. The core of dubbing is performance. Excellent dubbing actors are essential. AI dubbing is cheaper, but lacking human performance, it will directly lower the quality of the work. In the future, AI may evolve, but it must be accompanied and trained by human dubbing actors to improve quality."
