The death toll from the landslide in the southern mountains of Ethiopia has risen to 52 people.
According to a statement released by the government of Gamo district in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region (SNNPR) of Ethiopia on the 12th, continuous rainfall has caused a landslide in the area, resulting in the death of 52 people and many others missing. It is reported that the landslide occurred on the night of the 10th in Gamo district, with 52 bodies of victims found so far and another 50 people missing. Local government officials have stated that the final death toll may exceed one hundred individuals. The heavy rain has caused flooding and landslides, affecting transportation and making rescue efforts more difficult. The Governor of SNNPR, Kebde, warned residents in the affected areas to take precautionary measures as the rainy season may lead to similar disasters occurring again, and assured that the state government will provide necessary support to those affected. Ethiopia is currently in the rainy season, and continuous rainfall is a major factor leading to landslides in some areas of the country.
