On the 6th local time, a natural gas pipeline in the Cusco region of Peru exploded and leaked, causing major cities like Lima to suffer from paralyzed transportation and a significant surge in fuel prices. This event quickly escalated into a nationwide energy crisis sweeping across Peru. The acting chairman of the Peruvian Energy and Mining Investment Supervisory Agency, Alencastre, stated that over 350,000 taxi drivers, as well as many small vehicles and three-wheeled motorcycles, are unable to access natural gas supply. The Peruvian government has decided to suspend in-person classes at all primary, secondary, and higher education schools in Lima and Callao regions starting from March 9th, shifting to remote learning. Mandatory work from home for public sector employees has also been implemented.
