Anthropic's artificial intelligence chatbot Claude and related consumer-facing applications experienced a service interruption on Monday morning local time, as the startup company stated that they have been busy addressing "unprecedented demand" for their services over the past week. According to the service monitoring website Downdetector, the peak of the interruption occurred around 6:40 am Eastern Time, with nearly 2,000 users reporting abnormal Claude AI service. Anthropic posted a statement on WhatsApp saying that claude.ai and other "consumer-facing interfaces" as well as company applications were offline; however, enterprise customers who have integrated the Claude model into their systems were not affected. Anthropic stated in the announcement, "As we face unprecedented demand for Claude over the past week, we are working hard to restore the service, and thank everyone for their patience." The company later updated its status website, stating that the issue had been resolved as of 10:50 am Eastern Time, and all systems were back to normal operation. With disputes arising between Anthropic and the US Department of Defense regarding the potential use of their technology for mass surveillance and the development of autonomous weapons, the usage of their services has significantly increased recently. The Pentagon has identified Anthropic as a supply chain risk, taking unprecedented actions against a US company, which could have far-reaching implications for their business. Anthropic stated that the number of free users for Claude has increased by over 60% since January, and paid subscription users have more than doubled since October of last year.
