According to Reuters, industry sources said that suppliers of American aerospace and semiconductor companies are facing increasingly severe shortages of rare earth elements, with two suppliers even rejecting some customer orders as a result. The shortage is mainly concentrated on rare earth elements such as yttrium and scandium, which are niche members of the 17-element family and play a minor but crucial role in defense technology, aerospace, and semiconductor industries. Aerospace supply chain expert Kevin Michaels stated that while the shortage of yttrium has not yet affected jet engine production, manufacturers are still concerned. Dylan Patel, founder and CEO of semiconductor research company SemiAnalysis, said that the stocks of scandium for American semiconductor manufacturers are almost depleted, which will pose a risk to the production of the next generation of 5G chips.
