The Shanghai International Energy Exchange has resumed natural gas futures trading after a brief suspension due to technical issues.
After a brief halt in trading due to technical issues, the major natural gas futures and options contracts on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange have resumed trading. This is the second trading interruption in about a month. The exchange stated that the halt lasted approximately 35 minutes. The trading day coincided with the expiration of the March U.S. natural gas futures contract. Metal trading on the exchange's Globex platform was also affected. The exchange announced that the metal contracts reopened at 1:45 PM Central Time. On January 27th, natural gas futures skyrocketed to record levels, leading to an unusual 2-minute trading halt at the New York Mercantile Exchange, a subsidiary of the CME Group, causing confusion among traders due to deviations in settlement prices. Competitor Intercontinental Exchange's natural gas futures trading was not affected. Nicky Shiels, the metal strategy director at MKS PAMP SA, said that a sudden freeze in the market close is "a terrible time. It affects everyone who uses futures for pricing and hedging."
