Insiders: Anthropic stands firm in dispute with the Pentagon.
An insider familiar with the situation said on Tuesday that the artificial intelligence lab Anthropic has no intention of relaxing restrictions on military use, and added that negotiations are ongoing after a meeting with the Pentagon to discuss its future. The meeting between Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and US Secretary of Defense Pete Hexteeth was aimed at resolving a dispute that has lasted for months. The AI startup has refused to cancel safeguards to prevent its technology from being used for autonomous targeting of weapons and domestic surveillance in the US. Pentagon officials believe the government should only comply with US laws. The insider said that during the meeting, Hexteeth issued a final ultimatum to Anthropic: either join or the government will take tough action. These individuals said the options include labeling Anthropic as a supply chain risk or invoking the Defense Production Act to force Anthropic to change its rules. A knowledgeable senior Pentagon official said the government has demanded a response from Anthropic by 5 pm on Friday.
