Samsung SDI has made a breakthrough in the field of lithium metal batteries and may introduce commercialized solutions in the future.
South Korean battery manufacturer Samsung SDI stated that the company has made a breakthrough in extending the lifespan of lithium metal batteries and improving their safety, which could pave the way for the commercialization of its next generation products. Samsung SDI said that the company, in collaboration with Columbia University, has developed a fluorine-based gel polymer electrolyte that effectively suppresses the formation of dendrites, a key factor that long-term damages the performance of lithium metal batteries. Lithium metal batteries have the highest energy density in existing battery technologies, more than 1.6 times higher than traditional NCA lithium-ion batteries. However, due to their short cycle life, the commercialization process has been hindered.
