Foreign media: US Treasury Secretary agrees to Senate investigation of Powell in exchange for nomination of new Fed chairman.
According to the American financial media Semafor citing sources familiar with the matter, US Treasury Secretary Besent on Wednesday at a closed-door meeting with Senate Republicans, agreed with some lawmakers' suggestion that it should be the Senate Banking Committee rather than the Department of Justice that investigate Federal Reserve Chairman Powell. A knowledgeable legislator said that this move is intended to "test" whether it is possible to persuade Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina to lift his hold on the nomination of the Federal Reserve candidate. "They want to dangle this condition in front of Thom and see if he accepts it," the legislator said. "Thom looked expressionless at the time." Another source said this may be a workable compromise. A Republican congressman said, "The president wants an investigation," and having it conducted by the Banking Committee "satisfies this desire for an investigation." However, the first legislator expressed skepticism about this: "I would be very surprised if Thom accepts it."
