Trump has always portrayed himself as the main spokesperson for the Republican Party in addressing cost of living issues. Since December of last year, Trump has given five speeches on economic issues, in which he has claimed nearly 20 times that inflation has been controlled or significantly decreased, and nearly 30 times claimed that prices are falling. These statements contradict the close to 3% inflation rate over the past year, and the firsthand experience of voters paying higher prices for necessities. For example, since Trump took office a year ago, beef prices have risen by 18% and coffee prices have risen by 29%. Republican strategists say that giving conflicting information on the issues that voters care most about could damage his and the Republican Party's reputations before the mid-term elections in November, when control of Congress will be tested. Polls show that American voters are deeply dissatisfied with Trump's economic policies.
