If Wash refuses to lower interest rates, will he be taken to court? Berstein says that "depends on" Trump.
United States Treasury Secretary Scott Besent said that whether or not future Federal Reserve Chairman will be sued for not lowering interest rates as requested by Donald Trump will "depend on the President." During a hearing on Thursday, Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren asked Besent to promise that Kevin Wash, who was nominated last Friday as the Federal Reserve Chairman, will not be prosecuted or investigated if he does not set interest rates according to the President's instructions. "That depends on the President," Besent told Warren at the Senate Banking Committee hearing. Warren referred to reports over the weekend that Trump jokingly said at a dinner in Washington that Wash would be sued if he did not lower rates. "Can you promise, right here and now, if Donald Trump nominates Kevin Wash to the Federal Reserve and he does not lower interest rates exactly as Donald Trump wants, he will not be sued and will not be investigated by the Department of Justice?" Warren asked Besent during the hearing. "This should have been an easy question," Besent said, but after Warren mentioned that the final decision lies with the President, he said, "If it's a joke, why not just say so?" "It's a joke," Besent replied. "He's joking with you, Senator Warren. We're all laughing, we're all laughing."
