With the implementation of the new policy of duty-free shopping on outlying islands and the official start of operation of the Hainan Free Trade Port, Hainan's duty-free shopping market has seen a strong start. According to statistics from Haikou Customs, in January 2026, the amount of duty-free shopping in Hainan's outlying islands reached 45.3 billion yuan, with 560,000 shopping trips and 3.367 million items purchased, representing an increase of 44.8%, 21.0%, and 14.0% respectively compared to the same period last year. In terms of shopping groups, in the first month of 2026, outbound travelers spent 18.316 million yuan on duty-free goods, while island residents spent 14.389 million yuan on "buy now, collect later" shopping.
