Guangzhou: It is estimated that the number of people entering and leaving Guangzhou during the Spring Festival travel rush will reach 200 million.
On February 4th, the Guangzhou Municipal People's Government Information Office held the second press conference for the event "Guangzhou leads the way, with the most authentic Chinese New Year atmosphere". During the press conference, Zhang Zi, deputy director of the Guangzhou Municipal Transportation Bureau, introduced this year's characteristics of the Spring Festival travel in Guangzhou, as well as the security measures to ensure smooth transportation during the Spring Festival. Zhang Zi stated that the Spring Festival in Guangzhou in 2026 will have the characteristics of a long duration, large passenger flow, and heavy security tasks. It is expected to reach a record high in terms of passenger volume. With the Spring Festival lasting 40 days and an additional 9 days for the Chinese New Year holidays, the travel demands for visiting family and tourism will be concentrated, with an estimated 200 million trips in and out of Guangzhou during the Spring Festival, an increase of 3.8% compared to the previous year. At the same time, there will be new challenges for hub security, with the opening of the Guangzhou-Zhanjiang High-Speed Railway connecting to Guangzhou and Baiyun stations, and the official operation of Terminal 3 at Baiyun Airport, adding pressure to transportation security. In terms of travel methods, self-driving will be the main mode of transportation, with a predicted 3.4% increase in traffic flow on the expressway network, leading to possible congestion in some sections. Additionally, there will be pressure on public transportation during peak periods, particularly during the post-holiday rush period, where the demand for subway, bus, taxi, and ride-hailing services will be concentrated, putting significant pressure on the transportation organization and clearance of large passenger flows at major hub stations.
